Will o' the Wisp

I've had an enforced break from posting for the last week or so due to my PC's hardrive dying! The worst part, though, is that it's looking doubtful if any of the data can be retrieved. Like a complete idiot, I never got around to backing up most of my work, so this blog could well become the only record of my work.

Needless to say, I'm gutted: what makes it worse is the fact that I have a 500GB remote drive that I was given as a birthday present which I haven't even taken out of it's box!!

So, if anyone has any tips on retrieving data from dead drives, they would be much apreciated! :-)

No tips from me regarding your harddrive (i'm totally useless), but I'm absolutely mesmerized by your picture. Fantastic work, whatever and however you did it.
I take it my suggestions didn't work!

Another intriguing Carrintonesque image.
Dave Carrington: Your suggestion is being considered as we speak, Al! I'll let you know the outcome...
Oh Dave, that is such a shame! I must confess, I am guilty of similar neglect, and every time I hear of someone having this problem, I think I really should back up my files.

As for this photograph - well I love it! Wonderful glowing abstract. (:o)
Dave Carrington: Thanks for your commiserations, Ros! Glad you like the pic smile
Beautiful abstract. I'm thinking warm and colourful woolly jumper.

Ouch...my worst fear....my heart goes out to you, half of my shots are of my boys so i do back things up periodically although not as often as i should. recently I took my pc apart and put in a second harddrive, turns out its ridiculously easy and then it becomes so easy to back everything up just copy and paste into a file on the new local disc D: I'm sure there are people who specialise in retriving data like this though.love the colours and textures in this
Dave Carrington: Thanks, Padraig. Yes, I think it's possible to retrieve data, but it can be costly! :-(
Really sorry to hear this Dave. Our hardrive died on us a couple of years but luckily we had backed everything up - not that you want to hear that!
Dave Carrington: Hi, Bernie. Alas, it's my own fault for being too lazy to back up my work..!

oh Dave that is bad news fella, i do have 2 mates that if it is possible they would do it for nowt m8, LMK how you go on as i would ask them to have a look at it for you, both of them are whizz kids with comps. Once again really sorry to hear Dave but don't hesitate to get in touch.
Dave Carrington: Thanks very much for the offer, Tim. I may well take you up on that offer, although I do have someone toiling into the early hours in an attempt to retrieve my stuff!
There are specialists at data recovery Dave. You do see them advertised. There is also software you can get to do it yourself. Do not despair. It won't be cheap but it can be done
Dave Carrington: Thanks, Bill. Efforts are being made as I write!
Oh by the way I like the picture.
Dave Carrington: Kind of you to say so, Bill! smile
Splendid abstract ! Lovely colours.
Dave Carrington: Thanks, Florence!

gosh, sorry to hear that Dave, good luck. love the shot. mal
Dave Carrington: Thank you, Mal. Yep, it's a bummer, but it's my own silly fault!
Just been through your recent archive here Dave and enjoyed it immensely, especially this one- I like where you are going. Sadly I can't suggest a remedy for retrieving where you've been, and I know from personal experience that SC management can (and will happily) send you only your uploaded JPEGs which I'm sure are too low res for your purposes. Have you recovered it yet?
Dave Carrington: Glad you like it, David. With regard to the drive, it seems that it's beyond retrieval. I'm gutted as you can imagine but I look upon it as a salutory lesson: always back everything up!
Ouch- that must really hurt. I don't know if you use a Mac, but it backs up in the background without me even telling it to- sends it to an external drive- 500gig for about £100. I'm sure PCs have an equivalent and you have already bitten the bullet! Regards, David.
